Description
Easy Cheesy Scalloped Potatoes are a comforting side dish made with tender potatoes layered in a rich, creamy cheddar cheese sauce. They are easy to prepare and perfect for family dinners.
Ingredients
3 lbs Potatoes, sliced thi
1/4 cup Unsalted Butter
1/4 cup All-Purpose Flour
2.5 cups Whole Milk
2 cups Sharp Cheddar Cheese, freshly grated
3 cloves Garlic, minced finely
1/2 small Yellow Onion, finely diced or thinly sliced
Salt and Black Pepper, to taste
1 tsp Fresh Thyme
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease a 9×13 inch baking dish
- Wash and peel your potatoes; slice them into 1/8-inch thick rounds
- In a large saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add diced onions and cook until translucent, about 3-4 minutes. Stir in minced garlic and cook for another minute
- Sprinkle the flour over the butter and onion mixture. Whisk constantly for about 2 minutes
- Slowly pour in the milk while whisking vigorously to avoid lumps. Cook and stir until the sauce thickens
- Remove from heat and stir in 1.5 cups of cheddar cheese, salt, pepper, and thyme until cheese melts
- Arrange half of the potato slices in the baking dish. Pour half of the cheese sauce over potatoes. Repeat with the remaining slices and sauce
- Cover the dish tightly with aluminum foil and bake for 45 minutes. Remove foil, sprinkle remaining cheese on top, and bake an additional 15-20 minutes until potatoes are tender and top is golde
- Let the dish rest for at least 10 minutes before serving
Notes
For a gluten-free version, substitute all-purpose flour with a gluten-free blend.
If using smoked cheese, add smoked paprika for enhanced flavor.
