Description

Easy Cheesy Scalloped Potatoes are a comforting side dish made with tender potatoes layered in a rich, creamy cheddar cheese sauce. They are easy to prepare and perfect for family dinners.

Ingredients

Scale

3 lbs Potatoes, sliced thi
1/4 cup Unsalted Butter
1/4 cup All-Purpose Flour
2.5 cups Whole Milk
2 cups Sharp Cheddar Cheese, freshly grated
3 cloves Garlic, minced finely
1/2 small Yellow Onion, finely diced or thinly sliced
Salt and Black Pepper, to taste
1 tsp Fresh Thyme

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease a 9×13 inch baking dish
  2. Wash and peel your potatoes; slice them into 1/8-inch thick rounds
  3. In a large saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add diced onions and cook until translucent, about 3-4 minutes. Stir in minced garlic and cook for another minute
  4. Sprinkle the flour over the butter and onion mixture. Whisk constantly for about 2 minutes
  5. Slowly pour in the milk while whisking vigorously to avoid lumps. Cook and stir until the sauce thickens
  6. Remove from heat and stir in 1.5 cups of cheddar cheese, salt, pepper, and thyme until cheese melts
  7. Arrange half of the potato slices in the baking dish. Pour half of the cheese sauce over potatoes. Repeat with the remaining slices and sauce
  8. Cover the dish tightly with aluminum foil and bake for 45 minutes. Remove foil, sprinkle remaining cheese on top, and bake an additional 15-20 minutes until potatoes are tender and top is golde
  9. Let the dish rest for at least 10 minutes before serving

Notes

For a gluten-free version, substitute all-purpose flour with a gluten-free blend.

If using smoked cheese, add smoked paprika for enhanced flavor.
